ZerO2 oxygen absorber
The oxygen absorber ZerO2 was specially developed for pest control in larger volumes. It mainly consists of iron powder, salt, activated carbon and diatomaceous earth. When fresh, the content of the bags is soft and kneadable. If the bags are used up, the contents will be hard or chunky. This way you can check whether the bags are fresh. ZerO2 are usually double packed: first in yellow-green foil and secondly in aluminum compound foil. Both of these films must be opened before use. The bags cannot be regenerated!
The ZerO2 oxygen absorbers become warm at the beginning of the treatment (max. surface temperature 48°C during the first 12 h). Therefore, direct contact with sensitive materials such as wax, oil-based paints and silk should be avoided. When the oxygen is absorbed, this reaction stops and the absorber returns to the ambient temperature.
ZerO2 will release some moisture during its chemical reaction. RH inside the enclosure will rise up to 68% RH. According to our own tests, one pack of ZerO2 500g will release about 70 — 90 g water. When treating delicate objects or if a lower RH is desirable, desiccant bags Claypack 30g / 1 unit (10-15 bags per pack of ZerO2) should be added. An additional idea will be to pack objects into corrugated cardboard or to insert corrugated cardboard between ZerO2 and the works of art. Due to its large surface, corrugated cardboard will buffer the short moisture peak more efficiently than desiccant bags.
Oxygen concentration is monitored most efficiently with an oxygen meter Greisinger G1690 which will be placed right inside the anoxic bubble. For smaller pouches oxygen indicators might be a viable alternative.

Oxygen Absorber and Indicator
Storage of oxygen-sensitive goods (food, rubber, plastics, fats . )
The largest field of application for oxygen absorbers are foods. The oxygen absorbers ATCO FT are therefore all approved for food ( ATCO FTM 1000 not for direct contact with food ). The varieties offered here are suitable for the storage of cereals, pastries and much more.
Rubber can only be preserved for a long time in an oxygen-poor atmosphere. However, some plastics, paper, wood, textiles and metals also benefit from low-oxygen storage. In the case of photo and film materials, low-oxygen storage, on the other hand, has hardly any positive effect. Here is still very cool and dry storage the best conservation.
Storage of metals
Fund-fresh archaeological metal objects that must not dry out can be largely protected against corrosion with ATCO. The low-oxygen atmosphere also protects organic residues from aerobic microorganisms. In the bag conditions are produced similar to the conditions under the earth. Fresh metal surfaces can be obtained with the absorber RP-K for years shiny and solderable.
Pest control
With an oxygen content of less than 0.3%, all stages of development of the common insect pests are reliably killed within a few weeks. The objects are welded together with the appropriate amount of oxygen absorber in oxygen-tight film.

FAQ
How do I know what size oxygen absorber I need?
This is a rough guide to calculating required oxygen absorber size — it does not take into account the density of the food being stored.
1. Determine the internal cubic dimensions of the package (width x depth x height).
Eg. 5 x 4 x 10cm = 200cm3.
2. Determine the weight of food (in grams) to be packaged.
3. Deduct weight of food from the cubic dimensions of the package.
Eg. 200cm3 — 50gms = 150gm.
4. Multiply the answer by 0.21 (percentage of oxygen in the air) to determine size of oxygen absorber required.
Eg. 150gm x 0.21 = 31.5gm = 30cc oxygen absorber.
How do I use/store oxygen absorbers?
1. Plan your production flow in a way that the oxygen absorber sachets will not be exposed to air for more than 30 minutes.
2. Take the required amount of oxygen absorber sachets from the vacuum sealed bag, remove as much air from the bag as possible and seal/tape closed, then store in an airtight container.
3. The sachets you removed from the bag should be sealed within 30 minutes with the items you wish to protect. Note: it is normal for the sachets to heat up when exposed to air.
Why are oxygen absorbers warm?
When the oxygen absorbers react with oxygen, they become warm. This indicates that they are fresh and are working to absorb oxygen. If the oxygen absorbers are exposed to open air, they may become hot, however when sealed within a package this will not occur.
Why are unopened bags of oxygen absorbers hard?
Due to the vaccum seal, the bag will feel rigid with all oxygen absorbers clumped together. Once the bag is opened, the sachets will separate and should feel like they contain sand.
How do I know if my oxygen absorbers are still good?
The contents of the sachets should feel like sand. If they are hard and crunchy, they’ve had too much exposure to the air and should not be used.
